Ulises Solis-Ocana of North Portland was awarded a 2017 Newcomer Scholarship that is helping to pay for his schooling at Oregon State University. He plans to become a physical therapist.
Born in Mexico, Ulises’ parents brought him to Portland. When Ulises was in 6th grade, his principal at St. Andrew Nativity School told him he could achieve much if he lived by five characteristics: open to growth; loving; religious; committed to social justice; and intellectually
competent. “For the following three years,” he says, “those values were ingrained in my soul.”
He says he intends to be generous, active in issues of social justice and contribute to the general good.
